Correspondances with Alex Sushon

I was recently lucky enough to get in touch with Alex Sushon, the head of Night Slugs, the revolutionary label, churning out unfathomably good artists, such as Girl Unit (who I also may be interviewing), Mosca and Egyptrixx - there are many more too.

I've managed to set up an interview with Alex and Girl Unit (AKA Philip Gamble), and it should be happening some time around the end of next month. Keep your fingers crossed - my questions will be deep and hopefully so will their answers. For the producers out there too, you'll be glad to know, I'm aiming for a lot of technical details behind their tracks.

Alex Sushon was involved in the production of SMD's Synthesise music video. From doing a little research, as well as being DJ Bok Bok, he does a lot of the graphic designs too, sometime partnering up with Kate Moross.

You can visit Alex's blog here.

So hang on for a while and you should be reading some of the richest details about the 'Slugs. From the nitty gritty of production details to the future and what plans they currently have in the pipeline.

This is essential viewing for all you bassheads:

Swoon

The new summer 10 tune for me, Boys Noize has killed it with this remix. His recent remix of the new NERD track was pretty poor, but Alex has reassured me that hes still top dog with this track! Its a completely different side to him, the vocal over the top is soo catchy and uplifting, I cannot wait for this to be released. Im afraid all we have at the moment is a radio rip from Annie Mac. Hang tight

Jack BEATS NEW EP

Just got the new Jack Beats EP, and it is very different indeed. It contains some of their signature sounds with a very minimal tech house beat, it's very funky and will definitely get people dancing.
Out of Body is definitely the more mainstream tune of the 2 in the release, but it has a cracking build up with some lovely vocals. However the one for me is revolution, it's fucking cool and I love the subtle wobbles.

The Damn Bell Doors

Just discovered this crazy Russian duo, according to their soundcloud this tune has been around for a while but its a killer. Its pretty jokey, it contains a Peter Griffin sample which is nicely used for a sweet drop about gay marriage.

The Damn Bell Doors - Gay Marriage

However their most recent work is also a beauty, I discovered it on beatport and it features on a Kitch N Sync EP. Its called Agrebah, similar genre with a cool sample - but its a winning combo!

Kitch 'n Sync - Agrebah (The Damn Bell Doors Remix)

This is a winner too!

Heavy Duty Brothers - Hot (THE DAMN BELL DOORS remix) by The Damn Bell Doors

Im afraid you gotta buy this one ha

Nouveau Yorican

Big new tune from NouveauYorican, which is the combination of Laidback Luke and Gina Turner.
This is from their new EP - Jackit EP. It features remixes from Drop the Lime and Tony Senghore, personally the original is the best and the Drop the Lime is a close second. The original is very hectic, but the latter is very simple and effective. Also bundled in the original on a freebeeeee - so check it out!

You can buy it here

Ari Marcopoulos

Ari Marcopoulos is a photographer, film maker and artist. Born in 1957, he was around the age of 20 when he was assisting Andy Warhol and hanging out with Jean Michel Basquiat in New York City. Instead of developing a pop-art edge however, Marcopoulos ventured into the realms of matter-of-fact, day-by-day photography, capturing the lives and emotions of people living on the edge. His preference in themes, subject matters and people most commonly revolves around extreme sports and music culture. His beautiful landscapes and playful representations offer a dynamic and dramatic take on the awesomeness of life that we take for granted.

JUST WATCH

Marcopoulos' style has changed from back in the day when he was photographing the 1980's hip hop and skateboard cultural explosions. Back then, it's feel was almost voyeuristic - an witness-eye view of the socio-cultural changes in the youth's world. Heavily connoting the influences music and fashion have on people's groups, or, 'cliques'...

Nowadays, Marcopoulos' pictures focus heavily on portraiture and fashion photography elements, detracting the impact of media factors and replacing them with pure stylistic elements, such as great clothes, rich film and highly photogenic locations.

Isometrics

In a couple of weeks I'll be displaying artwork in an open gallery called 'The Shop'. A mate told me about it recently and managed to get me onboard. I'm still working on plans but I'm definitely going for a mathematical piece. I've always been a sucker for geometric imagery and 'form over function' but recently I was trawling through my year 9 maths exercise books, discovering an amzing page on isometrics.

Remember this great paper? Perfect for drawing cubes in a 30° format.

Anyway, I researched a little more into this graphical style common in architectural designs and came across the vastly popular Eboy imagery that is reminiscent of Sims 3000 from '98. They render whole cityscapes in isometric - it looks so cool, I think it's definitely what I'm gonna shoot for...

This style of image production is called 'pixel-art'. It's intensely nerdy.

Instead of spending the whole exhibition on a laptop however, I'm gonna project the isometric paper onto a wall in The Shop, lightly go over it on with pencil, and finally begin to create a timeline landscape of planet earth. I'll be using Sharpies, keeping it entirely black and white, always following the 30° rule...

Just imagine it in glorious isometrics - I cant wait...

I'll Keep you updated on the exhibition and show you the final product.  Hopefully in the drunken, pretentious, metaphor boasting after party I'll be able to build some hype for Righteous.

WE ARE BACK - CHA CHA CHA EP

What do you think of this? This tune is from a very obscure producer known as Wilnez Gre, but his most recent remix of Wolves Wolves off the the new Beataucue EP is a BANGER. Most definitely the best song off a very good EP. If this doesn't make you wanna jump up and down - somebody please save you!

If you like this, you can purchase the whole EP of Juno!
